Why a stairlift

Usually the fastest fix for hard stairs.

If the stairs are the only thing making your home hard to live in, a stairlift is often the answer. There's no construction. The rail mounts to the stair treads, not the wall, and the seat, arms and footrest fold up so everyone else can still use the stairs.

We'll measure your staircase, talk through who will be riding and how, and recommend a model that fits, including whether a straight rail will work or a custom curved rail makes more sense.

Options

Stairlifts for every kind of staircase

Whatever your stairs look like, there's a lift built for them.

Straight stairlifts

For staircases with no turns or landings. The most affordable option, and often installed in a single visit.

Curved stairlifts

A rail made to measure for your staircase, following landings, turns and spirals so you ride continuously from bottom to top.

Outdoor stairlifts

Weather-resistant models with a cover for porch, deck, garden and dock steps.

Heavy-duty models

Higher weight capacities (up to 400 lb on select models) and wider seats for extra comfort.

Planning

What to think about before you buy

A few questions decide which stairlift is right. We'll go through all of them at your consultation.

Who is riding

Balance, how easily the rider can stand and sit, and weight all shape the choice. A swivel seat lets the rider step off facing the landing, away from the stairs.

The top and bottom of the stairs

Doorways, hallways and turns decide whether a straight rail works. If the rail would block a door at the bottom, a hinged section can fold out of the way.

Outdoor steps and winter

Porch, deck and dock steps can take an outdoor unit with a weather cover. In our winters, plan for where snow will pile up and keep the rail clear.

Power outages

Stannah stairlifts run on batteries that recharge while the lift is parked, so they keep working for a number of trips when the power goes out.

Good to know

Stairlifts for churches and businesses

Lifts in churches, offices and other public buildings are handled differently from lifts in a private home, and state rules and inspections can apply. Tell us about the building and we'll recommend the right equipment, which is sometimes a stairlift and sometimes an inclined or vertical platform lift.

  • Stairlifts for members who can transfer to a seat
  • Inclined platform lifts for wheelchairs on stairs
  • Vertical platform lifts for entries and stages
  • Help understanding the inspection process

FAQ

Common questions

Will a stairlift fit my stairs?

Most residential staircases can take a stairlift, including narrow and curved ones. The rail mounts to the treads, so it works on most stair materials. We'll measure at your free consultation and confirm.

What's the difference between a straight and a curved stairlift?

A straight stairlift uses a standard rail cut to length, so it's faster and less expensive. A curved stairlift uses a rail made to measure for your staircase, which costs more and takes longer because it's built for your stairs.

How long does installation take?

A straight stairlift is often installed in a few hours once it's scheduled. A curved rail has to be manufactured to your measurements first, which usually takes a few weeks, and then installation typically takes a day.

Can other people still use the stairs?

Yes. The seat, arms and footrest fold up, and the lift parks at the top or bottom out of the way.

Does a stairlift work when the power is out?

Yes. Stannah stairlifts run on rechargeable batteries, so they keep working for a number of trips during an outage.

Can a stairlift go outside?

Yes. Outdoor models are built to handle weather and come with a cover. Keep the rail clear of snow and ice, and we'll recommend a model suited to your steps.

Do you service stairlifts you didn't install?

Yes. We service many stairlift brands, including Stannah and Bruno. Call with the make and model.
